The whirr of helicopter blades overhead always sparks the curiosity of Hilton Head residents.
Just before 12 p.m. Monday morning, some residents of Hilton Head Island heard a helicopter fly through the sky.
What’s going on? Here’s what we know.
What the helicopter was for
The aircraft that residents heard just before noon today was a medical helicopter transporting a patient in need of critical care to the Savannah area.
According to Joheida Fister, Deputy Fire Chief of Administration for Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue, a patient suffered a head injury in the Folly Field area this morning.
The patient was driven to the Hilton Head Island Airport and transported by helicopter to Savannah.
According to a log of the flight on FlightAware.com, the helicopter took off around 11:22 a.m., and landed around 11:40 a.m. it near the Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah.
The air ambulance traveled 29 miles in just 18 minutes, flight records show. That’s over 96 miles per hour!
FAA records show the helicopter was a Bell 407 operated by Air Methods LLC, the parent company of LifeStar Georgia Air Ambulance.
