Couple Kristen Miklinevich and Sam Kochan, seasoned restaurant owners and passionate food lovers, are preparing to bring a new kind of smoke to Beaufort soon.

Offering a mix of Texas-style barbecue, Mexican street flair and Southern hospitality, Bordertown BBQ is slated to open by the end of the month.

This highly anticipated restaurant is replacing the former Home Slice Pizzeria at 2001 Boundary Street, located behind Starbucks.

With doors opening soon, here’s what folks can expect to see on the menu.

What will Bordertown BBQ offer?

Drinks will be handled by Miklinevich, a longtime bartender with a passion for fresh, clean ingredients.

Some signature cocktails on the menu include:

  • Bordertown Margarita with fresh-squeezed juice
  • Boot Heel Sour with bourbon, grenadine and vanilla
  • Big Red Creamsicle with vodka, orange and Big Red soda

Beers, wine and homemade Bloody Mary’s and mimosas are also available. Mexican Coke, Mexican Sprite and Big Red soda are also on the drink menu.

Kochan is in charge of all things brisket – with slow-smoked meats cooked on a 1000-gallon stick burner smoker straight from Texas.

“We’re not taking shortcuts,” Kochan previously said. “A brisket takes 12 hours, which means I’m up at 2 a.m., lighting the wood on the smoker because that’s what real barbecue is.”

Brisket, smoked turkey and other meats will be sold by the half pound to give a Texas feel, along with combo platters, specials, Mexican-inspired street tacos and appetizer options.

Items include:

  • Brisket
  • Pulled pork
  • Pork ribs
  • Turkey
  • Chicken thighs
  • Sausage
  • Beef plate ribs
  • Smoked meat, shrimp or fish tacos
  • Sandwiches
  • Nachos

All meat is smoked with post oak wood.

Side items include tallow fries, slaw, cheese curds, beans, mac & cheese and more.

About the owners

Miklinevich and Kochan spent 13 years running successful spots in Massachusetts, including Mission Cantina and North Village Smokehouse.

Last year, they decided to sell their businesses and move south in search of sun, community and a new adventure, but it was a detour through Beaufort around Christmas two years ago that sealed the deal.

From there, they settled in the Lowcountry and brought their combined culinary experience to Beaufort.

The final step before Bordertown BBQ opens its doors is inspections, which are currently in progress. Owners state they expect to welcome guests in two weeks.

In the meantime, diners can follow along with restaurant updates on Instagram and on Facebook.
