Flying out of local airports was a challenge for Lowcountry residents Sunday morning as they woke up to a blanket of snow and record-low temperatures.

But as the wind died down and the sun started to melt the buildup Sunday afternoon, flights departing the Hilton Head area look to be mostly back on schedule.

The majority of flights departing the Savannah-Hilton Head International Airport on Sunday afternoon are still on schedule for normal departure, according to the airport’s website.

Flights heading to the Queen City, where a “solid 11 inches of snow” fell at Charlotte Douglas International Airport on Saturday, are either cancelled or delayed for the rest of Sunday.

Arrivals are more of a mixed bag for the remainder of the weekend. While some flights are already in air or on schedule, others have been delayed or otherwise cancelled. Of the 22 flights anticipated to arrive the rest of the day, 14 are in air or on schedule.

Lori Lynah, a spokesperson for the airport, said that for the rest of the day and evening, passengers are encouraged to check with their carriers for the most up-to-date information regarding flights.

Two American Airlines flights to and from Charlotte to the Hilton Head Island Airport have also been canceled, according to the airport’s website.

Flight troubles earlier in the day were paired with record-low temperatures to the Lowcountry.

Temperatures in the Beaufort area were as low as 21 degrees early Sunday, according to the National Weather Service Charleston’s 5 a.m. update. An extreme cold warning will stay in place until 1 p.m. Sunday.

Temperatures could get as high as 38 degrees Sunday afternoon, and winds will “gradually diminish” this morning, according to the NWS.
