A new creative space dedicated to clay, community and connection is set to open in Washington Square in Bluffton this spring.

Located next door to Beautique Medical Aesthetics, The Pottery Studio by Magpie Ceramics at 25 Minetta Lane, Unit 107, is aiming for a March 1 opening, bringing a pottery studio and gallery to Bluffton for the first time.

Owned and operated by Maggie Harrington, the studio represents the culmination of more than 15 years of experience selling handmade ceramics at markets – and several years of rebuilding both her craft and purpose.

What will The Pottery Studio offer?

The 1,900 square-foot studio will feature 13 pottery wheels, ample hand-building space and an environment designed for beginners and experienced makers alike.

The Pottery Studio will offer both wheel throwing and hand building classes for $95 and four- and six-week courses, starting at $450.

One unique aspect of these courses, Harrington says, is that the studio will recycle and provide the clay and materials.

“By recycling clay, we can encourage people not to be nervous about making mistakes,” Harrington said. “That’s how you learn.”

The studio will also offer one-time workshops, visiting artist sessions, corporate events and private parties.

Open studio hours will be held Tuesdays and Saturdays from noon to 4 p.m., an ideal time for folks to take a spin and test out a new skill.

Regular hours will vary throughout the week, generally running 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The studio will be closed on Sundays.

In addition to classes, Harrington says the space will feature a gallery dedicated to ceramic artists of the Lowcountry, giving local makers a platform to showcase their work.

About the owner

Harrington, originally from New York, has been creating pottery for over a decade, but her path to opening a brick-and-mortar studio was anything but straightforward.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, she was working as a registered nurse when life took an unexpected turn.

As the demands of the pandemic intensified, Harrington also found herself helping rehabilitate her husband back to health after a hefty battle with the illness – an experience that ultimately prompted a major career shift.

During that time, Harrington rekindled her love for the craft.

“Clay became therapeutic for me,” she said.

Now, over the past four and a half years, she has rebuilt her skills, relocated to Bluffton and revamped her love for the craft, leading to the creation of Magpie Ceramics and now, finally, a permanent studio space.

The name “Magpie” is deeply personal, too.

The nickname comes from Harrington’s grandmother, with whom she shares a love of collecting inspiration from the world around them.

For Harrington, opening the studio is about more than filling a physical space – it’s about building a space she felt was missing.

“There wasn’t a place for artists like this in Bluffton, and I was really looking for that sense of community,” she said.

Presale classes are available through Jan. 15, offering early access for those eager to get their hands muddy before the official opening this spring.
