Stowaway kitten ‘Flash’ rescued from under vehicle by Bluffton fire crew

A kitten named “Flash” is now recovering at the Beaufort County animal shelter after becoming trapped in the undercarriage of a vehicle.

Firefighters with the Bluffton Township Fire District carried out the rescue operation last week, which involved about 10 minutes of “patient, steady work.”

A video shared by the department shows Senior Mechanic Tyler Williams holding a flashlight in his mouth as he wrangles out the black and white kitten, still clinging tight to the vehicle’s underside.

Two Bluffton residents came to the fire station on Burnt Church Road after the kitten darted in front of them on Bluffton Parkway and promptly disappeared. They pulled over to check on the animal, but there was no sign of the feline — only later came a faint meowing from underneath the vehicle.

When the firefighters working to find the cat were dispatched to a medical call, personnel at the district’s maintenance shop — along with Williams — were called in for assistance.

Named for her rush across the roadway, Flash is recovering and gaining weight at the Beaufort County Animal Campus as she prepares for adoption or fostering, the fire district said.
