$900k ‘pocket park’ underway near Coligny Circle on Hilton Head. Take a peek
Shopped in Coligny Plaza lately?
You may have noticed some construction activity at the southwest corner of the plaza.
The town of Hilton Head is building a new $900,000 “pocket park” in the triangle-shaped space between Carolina Coffee and Crumbs and the Shell Shop.
The half-acre park, situated alongside Coligny Circle, is expected to complete by April 2026, according to a press release.
The park will have a circular gathering space adorned with a trellis and string lights and be furnished with tables and chairs.
Bike racks and a bicycle repair station will be installed in the park. The town is also widening the multi-use pathway that runs through the plot of land.
The park was designed by Hilton Head-based landscape architecture firm Wood + Partners. The company’s design portfolio includes the new Lowcountry Celebration Park and the redeveloped Sea Pines Harbour Town Golf Links Clubhouse. Local home builder Esposito Construction is constructing the park.
Funding for the project comes from property taxes in the Coligny and Pope Avenue areas using a method called tax increment financing. Increasing property values in the Coligny area generate more property tax revenue for the town, which the town uses to fund local improvements such as parks and amenities.
The Coligny Pocket Park is one of eleven community park projects Hilton Head is working on over the next three years. Upgrades are coming to Crossings Park, and two new parks are underway in historic Gullah neighborhoods.
