Ready to kick-start the upcoming school year?

The Beaufort County School District has opened applications for its 2026–27 School Choice Program, giving families the opportunity to request placement in schools outside their attendance zones that better match their child’s interests or academic goals.

Now in its 12th year, the district’s choice initiative offers students access to specialized program options at schools throughout Beaufort County.

The program, which was expanded in 2015 to include every district school, aims to give families more flexibility and ensure every student can learn in an environment that suits their strengths. BCSD now serves more than 20,000 students across over 30 schools.

With some schools and programs nearing capacity, here’s how the choice program works and what to expect when applying:

What is the BCSD Choice Program?

BCSD’s Choice Program allows students who live in Beaufort County to apply for enrollment in specialized programs at schools outside their regular attendance zones.

The initiative gives families access to academic opportunities that may not be offered at their zoned schools, which include:

  • Advanced math, engineering and science
  • Montessori
  • Arts integration
  • Language immersion
  • Early College
  • Medical and technology pathways
  • BCSD Tides (dual enrollment partnership for rising 9th-grade students)
  • Career and Technical Education programs

The choice model is offered in two forms:

  • School-within-a-school: A school provides both a traditional curriculum for zoned students and a specific choice option available to all county residents. Beaufort Elementary School, for example, offers a traditional elementary curriculum and choice options in Montessori and advanced math, engineering and science.
  • School-wide programs: Every student in the school participates in a specialized instructional model. For example, Lady’s Island Elementary has a full arts-infused approach.

If a choice program is already available at the school your child is in attendance for, you can connect with your school’s counselor. Note that some schools have exceptions for advanced or Montessori placements.

All BCSD schools incorporate a science, technology, engineering, and math focus, with core instruction in the arts, world languages and technology.

Grades & eligibility

Choice programs are open to kindergarten through 12th-grade students who reside in Beaufort County.

BCSD says that school choice options are not available for pre-K students and that they must attend the schools in their attendance zones.

Students accepted into a choice program may remain enrolled until completing all grades at that school, as long as they continue to reside in the county. However, students must reapply at each new school level — elementary to middle and middle to high school.

Students can return to their zoned schools at any time during the year, but if they withdraw from a choice program, they cannot re-enter it until the following school year.

Students can be removed from a school choice programs due to academic, attendance or discipline concerns.

Applications & placement

Applications must be submitted online via the district website by Thursday, Jan. 15, 2026, at 5 p.m. Families without internet access can receive assistance at any district school.

BCSD states that applications are not reviewed on a first-come basis and that all applications will be reviewed after the Jan. 15 deadline.

During the 2024–25 school year, BCSD received 1,004 choice applications. Of those, 711 were approved and 186 were denied.

If the number of applications for a school or specific program exceeds capacity, BCSD says that a lottery will be held to determine which applications are approved. If a student is denied, an appeal may be filed in writing and postmarked within two weeks of a denial notice.

Participation in the choice program is free of charge, but families are responsible for transportation if their student attends a school outside their attendance zone.

Schools at capacity

Some schools have reached or exceeded enrollment limits, meaning there is no room for choice. Families may still submit applications to these schools, and if limited space becomes available, BCSD states that lottery numbers will be drawn in the spring.

For the 2026–27 school year, the following schools are at capacity:

  • Okatie Elementary School
  • River Ridge Academy (grades 6–8)
  • Robert Smalls Leadership Academy
  • Pritchardville Elementary School

To help address overcrowding at Okatie and Pritchardville, the district is currently constructing May River Elementary School, slated to open in 2027.
