Update: Beaufort man identified as victim in deadly Cross Creek Plaza shooting

Update: Coroner’s staff identified the victim of Monday night’s shooting as 28-year-old Christopher Jamal Burton of Beaufort. He was pronounced dead around 4 a.m. Tuesday at Beaufort Memorial Hospital.

Burton’s funeral arrangements were entrusted to Allen Funeral Home and would be announced at a later date, according to his obituary.

One person was killed in a Monday night shooting at a Beaufort shopping center, according to police.

Police were called just before 9 p.m. to the Cross Creek Plaza at 330 Robert Smalls Parkway (S.C. 170), finding one victim with multiple gunshot wounds in the parking lot near Little Caesars Pizza, according to Lt. Lori Evans, a spokesperson for the Beaufort Police Department.

Officers attempted life-saving measures before the gunshot victim was taken to a local hospital, where they died of their injuries, according to police. The Beaufort County Coroner’s Office had not yet released the name of the victim.

No other injuries were reported, but an exterior wall of Little Caesars was damaged, Evans said.

No arrests connected to the case had been announced as of Monday morning.

Cross Creek Plaza is adjacent to Beaufort’s Walmart store on Robert Smalls Parkway. Its collection of businesses includes Planet Fitness, Belk, Big Lots and Academy Sports + Outdoors.
