Hit HBO Max series based in SC nominated for 6 Emmy awards. Here’s what to know
South Carolina-based television series, “The Righteous Gemstones,” has pinched six Emmy nominations this year for its fourth and final season.
“The Righteous Gemstones” is an HBO Max comedy-drama television series that follows a world-famous televangelist family in South Carolina with a long tradition of deviance, greed and charitable work.
Largely filmed in Charleston, the series showcases several recognizable Lowcountry locations, including Citadel Mall and the North Charleston Coliseum and Performing Arts Center.
Scenes were also shot in Beaufort County, with Hunting Island among the notable backdrops featured throughout the series.

“The Righteous Gemstones” nabbed six Emmy nominations this year, bringing the series total to 10 with additional nods in 2022 and 2024.

This season’s episodes “Prelude” and “You Hurled Me Into the Depths, Into the Very Heart of the Seas” were singled out for excellence in cinematography, music, costumes and makeup.
The entire series was recognized for its stunt coordination.
The 2025 Emmy Awards will air live on CBS on Sept. 14.
About “The Righteous Gemstones”
Created by Danny McBride, the fictional series stars John Goodman, Adam Devine, Edi Patterson and Cassidy Freeman as members of a Southern televangelist dynasty.
Goodman portrays the family’s widowed patriarch, Eli Gemstone, who struggles to mourn the loss of his wife while preserving his family’s sprawling religious empire.
The story follows Eli’s adult children, Jesse, Judy and Kelvin, as they navigate lives of privilege, scandal, immaturity and internal power struggles. Despite their opulent lifestyles and questionable behavior, the family maintains an enormous following and multi-million-dollar ministry.
Since premiering in August 2019, the show has released four seasons with a total of 36 episodes. The series officially concluded in May 2025.
