From Lowcountry boils, Frogmore Stew and oysters, the Lowcountry region is known for its seafood dishes and delicacies.

One of the most popular dishes, perfect for an appetizer or meal in its own right, is she-crab soup, which has been a staple in this region of South Carolina since the 1700s (but some argue it came about even earlier).

Over time, French and Creole influences tweaked the recipe, and in the early 1900s, William Deas, chef and butler to Charleston Mayor R. Goodwyn Rhett, added crab roe to the recipe, altering the look and taste, giving it the iconic flavor we know today.

Over time, this Southern soup grew in popularity and restaurants began adding their own spins to the dish.

Today, diners in the Lowcountry will likely find this piece of South Carolina’s past on their menus at a handful of restaurants.

From fancy waterside dining to relaxed seafood joints, dining locations across the Lowcountry offer this time-honored dinner item, and now, we want to know which one is your favorite?
