As we get older, getting behind the wheel can often seem like a daunting task.

While no state law sets an age limit for holding a driver’s license in South Carolina, factors such as changing technology, age and medical conditions can affect your driving.

Luckily, there are a few resources available for transportation if putting a car key into the ignition doesn’t feel like the right choice for you.

Home care providers can often help with assistance and rides to places like medical appointments, grocery stores and other daily tasks, but if home care doesn’t apply to you, here is a roundup of other transportation and rideshare options available in the Lowcountry region.

Each of these services provides point-to-point scheduled transportation or taxi options. They also provide options for airport pick-up and drop-off if needed.

Uber & Lyft services

Mobile phone services, like Uber and Lyft, are also available in certain areas of the Lowcountry. These apps allow you to request rides and pick-up/drop-off locations for your transportation needs.

To schedule a ride, you simply put in your pick-up location, drop-off location, and search through the available drivers to find the ride option that best fits your needs.

Car models and ride costs are listed when deciding which ride you wish to take. You are also able to request certain kinds of vehicles if needed.

All of this is done directly through your smartphone, and both app platforms provide real-time communication with your driver.

Uber & Lyft for seniors

Uber and Lyft also offer ride options specifically for seniors. Here’s how these services work:

Lyft Silver

Lyft Silver is a service designed for older adults, still supported through the smartphone app.

Lyft Silver provides riders with cars tailored to their needs, in vehicles easy to maneuver in and out of, along with live phone support.

To activate Lyft Silver, follow these steps;

  • Open the Lyft smartphone app.

  • Click the ‘You’ tab in the bottom right-hand corner.

  • Find the list under ‘Programs’.

  • Select the ‘Lyft Silver’ tab.

  • Select the slider bar next to ‘Use Lyft Silver’ so it turns green to activate the service.

Uber Health

Uber Health offers a platform for non-emergency medical transportation services. These rides can be scheduled by healthcare providers and allow them to monitor their patients’ rides. This process is done without patients needing the Uber app or a smartphone.

Areas in the Lowcountry with this service include:
