After a weekend of heavy rains and thunderstorms, drivers on Hilton Head should avoid treating their morning commutes like a round of Mario Kart: exercise caution and don’t drive through water.

The town issued a warning Monday for Hilton Head motorists to drive carefully and expect flooded areas and problems with traffic lights.

Some intersections may be in “flash mode,” which drivers should treat as a stop sign. Drivers may also encounter delays in vehicle detection at some intersections.

A large pool of water is present on the westbound lane of Marshland Road near Jessica Drive. Other areas of standing water may be present.

To stay safe, remember the phrase “Turn Around, Don’t Drown” and avoid driving through pools of water, officials said.

The town is working with the South Carolina Department of Transportation to review flood-prone spots and place warning signs where needed, according to the press release

Residents can report downed tree limbs, flooding, and signal issues to town staff via the MyHHI app.
