A long walk along the beach on a summer afternoon doesn’t need to break the bank for residents of Hilton Head Island. Despite new vehicle parking fees in effect at almost all public beaches this season, long-term residents can apply online to receive as many as two free parking permits.

Who can park for free on Hilton Head Island?

Anyone that lives within Hilton Head town limits for more than half the year — 183 days or more — is eligible for a town-issued parking pass that will allow them to park for free at any of the island’s beaches. (Sorry, timeshare junkies — you’ll have to start paying for parking this year.)

Residents of Windmill Harbor and Blue Heron Point, two communities that are physically located on the island but outside of town limits, are not eligible for resident parking passes, town spokesperson Carolyn Grant confirmed.

Permits are limited to two per address. That includes golf carts, which also need a permit to avoid parking fees.

The permits, which are digital, are are valid from Jan. 1 to Dec. 31. Parking fees are enforced during the island’s peak beach season from March 1 to Sep. 7, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

What documents to I need to apply?

To apply for a resident parking permit, you’ll need a valid vehicle registration and proof that you live within town limits. Golf carts must be registered with the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles.

Here’s what you need for proof of residency:

  • Property owners: Tax bill or closing documents

  • Renters: Current lease agreement with lease term of at least 183 days

Note: If the property is a short-term rental, the owner can’t use it to get a resident parking permit.

How to apply for a resident parking permit

  • Online: Enter your information into the online application on the town’s website. Upload copies of your vehicle registration(s) and proof of residency when prompted.
  • By mail: Download the application from the town’s website. Mail the application, along with your supporting documents, to PCI Municipal Services, 32 Office Park Road, Suite 108

What if I applied for a parking permit in 2024?

You’ll need to renew your 2024 parking permit to use it in 2025. Check your inbox for an email sent on Dec. 2 from ParkLynk with a link to renew your permit for free.
