Winter weather updates for Beaufort and Jasper Counties: What will be closed Thursday and Friday

A winter storm swooped across the Lowcountry this week, halting businesses, restaurants, schools and more from normal operations.

The biggest threat for the area now that the snow has sprinkled through is road safety. Black ice and snow continue to create dangerous road conditions, and Beaufort and Jasper county officials are advising all residents to avoid driving.

With more snow and cold than anticipated, many locations are adjusting their Thursday and Friday hours.

This story will be updated as more locations announce their protocols.

Here is what we know for schools, offices and businesses for the remainder of the week:

Government Offices & Operations:

All government offices anticipate returning to a normal schedule and business hours on Monday, Jan. 27. Refer to their websites or social media for updates.

Hilton Head Town Hall will remain closed on Thursday, Jan. 23 and Friday, Jan. 24 but all online business services remain operation through their website. Normal business hours are set to resume on Monday, Jan. 27.

The Town of Bluffton offices will remain closed on Thursday, Jan. 23 and Friday, Jan 24. with employees working remotely. Town services will remain open electronically.

The City of Beaufort announced that their offices will remain closed on Thursday, Jan. 23 and Friday, Jan. 24. They plan to open for normal hours on Monday, Jan. 27.

Beaufort County offices and operations will also be closed, details are listed below.

If there are any changes, they will be updated here. Emergency services are available.

  • County Convenience Centers: Convenience Centers will remain closed on Thursday, Jan. 23 and Friday, Jan. 24. The four main convenience center locations will open on Saturday, January 25 at 10 a.m. Those four locations are:

  1. St. Helena: 639 Sea Island Parkway, St. Helena
  2. Bluffton: 104 Simmonsville Rd., Bluffton
  3. Hilton Head: 26 Summit Dr., Hilton Head
  4. Shanklin: 80 Shanklin Rd., Beaufort
  • Hardeeville City Offices: Offices will remain closed on Thursday, Jan. 23 and Friday, Jan. 24.

  • Hardeeville Recreation Center will remain closed on Saturday, Jan. 25 and all scheduled programs and games have been canceled.

  • Jasper County Offices: Offices will remain closed on Thursday, Jan. 23 and Friday hours are to be announced soon. Jasper County also announced that jury duty is not required for the remainder of the week.

  • Jasper County Convenience Centers: Jasper County Convenience Centers will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 25

  • Town of Bluffton Park Party on Saturday, Jan. 25 has been canceled and is set to be rescheduled for a later date.

  • Libraries: Closed Thursday. Friday hours to be announced.

  • Beaufort County Auditor Office: Closed Thursday. Friday hours are to be determined.

  • Palmetto Breeze Transportation Services: All services are suspended for Thursday, Jan. 23 and Friday, Jan. 24.

  • Waste Management: Operations and services will resume Monday, Jan. 27 with a regular schedule for all lines of business.

  • Beaufort County Animal Services: Pets should be brought inside to shelter from the weather. Remember, if it’s too cold for you, it’s too cold for them.

  • County Airports: Both Hilton Head Island Airport and Beaufort Executive Airport airfields are closed due to ice. Travelers should check with their carriers.

  • Daufuskie Island - Lowcountry Ferry Service: Ferry service to Daufuskie Island through Lowcountry Ferry has been suspended for Thursday, Jan. 23. Ferry riders should monitor the website for any updates. Service is based on public safety, monitoring of weather conditions and the Captain’s discretion.

  • Rescheduled Beaufort County Workshops and Meetings:

The US 278 Workshop will be rescheduled to a later date.

The Public Facilities and Safety Committee meeting has been postponed to Monday, Jan. 27.

The Public Meeting for the Big Estate Road Sidewalk has been postponed to Tuesday, Jan. 28.

Chat with Council has been postponed to Tuesday, Jan. 28.

The Zoning Board of Appeals meeting has been postponed to Thursday, Jan. 30.

Schools:

Beaufort County School District:

Wednesday, Jan. 22: BCSD has an eLearning and remote workday.

Thursday, Jan. 23: There will be no school or eLearning on Thursday and district buildings will be closed.

UPDATE Friday, Jan. 24: There will be no school or eLearning, Friday, Jan. 24 and district buildings will be closed.

All extracurricular and athletic activities scheduled through Sunday, Jan. 26, are canceled.

Unless the district communicates otherwise, schools will resume normal operations on Monday, January 27, 2025.

The joint Board of Education/SIC meeting will be postponed until a date to be determined in February.

Due to prior storms this school year, there are no more eLearning days to use, meaning that BCSD will use the predetermined weather day on March 17.

Jasper County School District:

Wednesday, Jan. 22, is a Professional Development Day for Jasper County schools, meaning that there will be no students in attendance at schools. Faculty and staff will work from home for the scheduled professional development activities on this day.

Thursday, Jan. 23: Jasper County School District will have an eLearning Day on Thursday, Jan. 23.

UPDATE Friday, Jan. 24: Jasper County School District will have an eLearning day on Friday, Jan. 24 and all staff will work remotely. A decision for Monday, Jan. 27 will be decided over the weekend.

All evening athletic activities will be rescheduled for a later date.

Medical facilities:

Beaufort Memorial Hospital plans to return to normal operating hours on Thursday, with other facilities and clinics scheduled to open at 10 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 23.

Novant Health facilities including Hilton Head Medical Center, Coastal Carolina Hospital and Tidewatch Emergency Department are open and operational but have specific closings for Thursday, Jan 23. These include:

  • Outpatient departments including radiology and lab departments closed Thursday, Jan. 23
  • Elective surgeries for Thursday, Jan. 23 have been rescheduled and patients have been contacted.
  • Physician offices are anticipated to open at noon on Thursday, Jan. 23 unless weather deems it unsafe.

Sea Pines Immediate Care Center is open, Thursday, Jan. 23.

Grocery Stores:

Publix: Locations are open for normal business hours from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., but customers should check with their local stores if weather conditions worsen.

Kroger: Open for normal weekday hours from 7 a.m. to midnight but customers should expect low stock and potential order cancellations.

Harris Teeter: Open for normal hours 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

ALDI: Open for normal hours from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

The Fresh Market: Open for normal business hours from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., but is subject to change based on weather conditions.

Walmart: Open for normal business hours from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.

Food Lion: All locations are open for normal hours from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m., but are subject to change based on weather conditions.

Piggly Wiggly in Hilton Head: Open for normal business hours 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Mail:

USPS: All USPS locations are open for normal business hours. The latest service alert update was at 2:30 p.m., on January 23. USPS stated that deliveries were being impacted by icy conditions for South Carolina and that residents should allow for additional time for items to be delivered.

UPS: UPS stated on their website that there will be no pick-ups or delivery service on Thursday for specific areas in the southeast, including Beaufort and Jasper counties. For a full list of impacted SC zip codes, click here.

Amazon: No operational impacts have been posted, but delays are expected.

Cold Shelters:

  • Sea Island Presbyterian Church, 81 Lady’s Island Drive, Beaufort, will operate from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 a.m. through the morning of Saturday, January 25.

Winter weather tips:

  • Do not drive unless you have to. Staying off the roads, unless absolutely essential, will help ensure the safety of all and facilitate the efforts of emergency services.

  • Check on your vulnerable neighbors, friends and/or family to ensure they’re prepared for weather changes.

  • Bring your pets inside. If they’re too large to come indoors, make sure they have adequate shelter and access to extra food and fresh water.

  • Wear warm clothing: Dress in warm layers of loose-fitting, lightweight clothing. Wear a hat that covers your ears. Wear mittens and cover your mouth with a scarf to protect your lungs. Wear waterproof, insulated boots to keep your feet warm and dry and to maintain your footing in ice and snow.
