Hilton Head beach restoration work to impact these restaurants, hotels, parks, homes and more soon
Hilton Head’s 2025 beach renourishment is the fourth major project Hilton Head has undergone since its initial restoration 34 years ago.
The project is sponsored and funded by the Beach Preservation Fee and the Town of Hilton Head Island with an estimated price of $40 million, making it the most expensive beach renourishment project to date.
This project is planned to start in June of 2025 and the town states that machinery and project preparation are expected to start arriving on beaches in April.
The renourishment will be a 24/7 project and will be divided up into two different construction windows. The first window is between June-October of 2025 and the second will be through September-May of 2026.
Timeline outlined by the Town of Hilton Head
Phase 1: June 2025 to October 2025: Includes The Heel, Fish Haul Creek, Port Royal Plantation and Pine Island
Phase 2: September 2025 to May 2026: Includes Central Island, South Island and South Beach.
Phase 3: Timing not yet determined: This phase of the project includes the Pine Island structures.
Project managers Shawn Colin and Jeff Netzinger state that anywhere between 200 to 300 feet will be worked on with 1,000 feet of beach restricted each day.
By the project’s completion, 14 miles worth of beach will have been renourished.
This is a continuously moving project and noise and barriers are expected to impact beachgoers over the coming months.

What is beach renourishment?
- Beach renourishment is the process of placing additional sediment on a beach or in the nearshore.
- Due to natural erosion, the daily ebb and flow of water continually shapes the shoreline.
- Beach renourishment is necessary to restore and replace sand to keep beaches safe and healthy.
- Beach renourishment also helps support wildlife and habitat loss. It is also vital when protecting shorelines from storms and supports better space for beach recreation.
- Sand placement offers a better environment for endangered species such as sea turtles and birds and provides added storm protection to oceanfront homes, businesses and other structures.
