Beaufort County schools announce remote learning for Monday classes in Helene aftermath
As the last weekend in September comes to a close, the Beaufort County School District announced that classes will continue meeting virtually for e-learning Monday. After-school and extracurricular activities Monday afternoon were also canceled, the district announced.
In an email Sunday afternoon around 3:15 p.m., Beaufort County School District spokesperson, Candace Bruder, also told district families that they look forward to welcoming students back on Tuesday for classes.
The decision was made after Beaufort County faced widespread power outages, road closures and other significant damages Friday in Helene’s aftermath.
Friday morning, Beaufort County residents woke to howling winds, fallen trees and downed power lines, significant debris in roadways and thousands without electricity as Helene swept through the Lowcountry. Power struggles continued into the weekend, with about 17% of Beaufort County residents without power Saturday afternoon.
District families were also made aware Sunday afternoon that the schools will be flexible for students who are without electricity or internet.
“Students still experiencing issues from the storm will have five-days to complete any work, and beyond that schools will work with any families experiencing extenuating circumstances,” Bruder wrote.
On Friday morning, Bruder told district families that they were assessing the 30+ schools across the county. Bruder said that she would know more about this assessment on Monday.
