Hilton Head to get an official Monopoly board game for 1st time. What will Boardwalk be?

The Town of Hilton Head Island is getting an official Monopoly board for the first time in March 2025, containing property squares representing 22 businesses, organizations and places on the island.

Over the next week, Hasbro Game Manager Tim Barney is set to travel around Hilton Head Island to meet with residents to finalize board properties. The community will also inspire the utilities and Chance and Community Chest cards, he said. The squares and cards won’t be released until the board is.

“I’m trying to pick up on all the little niche things,” Barney said. “No board should be exactly the same as any other board.”

Hasbro has between 40 and 50 community editions, according to Barney. He said the board’s four corners — GO, Free Parking, JAIL, and Go to Jail — are consistent across all boards for licensing reasons, meaning the bridge traffic to Hilton Head Island cannot be “JAIL.” The game pieces, including the thimble and Scotty dog, will also be Monopoly’s classic set.

Those signature traits make it different from the knock-off versions that occasionally circulate. Unlike a knock-off, this map will be Hasbro-approved. Other brands in Hasbro’s portfolio include Dungeons and Dragons, Nerf, Transformers, Play-Doh and Peppa Pig.

Buyers can find at least two Hilton Head-themed knock-off versions of the trademarked Monopoly game on reseller sites like eBay. One created, in 2009, had Harbour Town Lighthouse and Harbour Town Golf Links as the most expensive properties, replacing Boardwalk and Park Place in the original version. Other “properties” on those versions include RBC Heritage, the Liberty Oak Tree, the Frost Fog Cafe, the Daufuskie Island Ferry and Folly Field Beach.
