A Port Royal fire resulted in severe damage to the small one-story home and the death of 71-year-old woman Linda Bailey.

Firefighters were dispatched to the fire at around 7:07 a.m. Friday morning where they found smoke and heavy flames coming from the home. Firefighters on scene immediately began searching for occupants and finding the woman deceased, according to Ross Vezin, spokesperson for the City of Beaufort/Town of Port Royal Fire Department.

The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division investigates all fire fatalities, Vezin said. So, questions about the cause and start of the fire remain unanswered until SLED finishes their investigation, which could take the rest of the day Friday, according to Vezin.

The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette will update this story with the cause of Bailey’s death once it become available.
