Sea Pines house fire kills one, investigation ongoing

Staff file

A Sunday evening house fire in Hilton Head’s Sea Pines community left one dead, town officials announced Monday morning.

Around 7 p.m. Sunday, a fire crew was dispatched to a house on Governors Road after detecting a smoke alarm activation, according to a news release. The crew spotted smoke rising from the house and elevated the call to an ongoing structure fire.

When crews entered the home, one occupant was found dead in the room the fire was believed to have started in. The fire was soon put out.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office has requested South Carolina Law Enforcement Division, or SLED, personnel to assist with the investigation, according to the town release.

The identity of the deceased and cause of the fire have not been released at time of publication.

The last fatal fire on Hilton Head occurred in September 2022, when a fire in Palmetto Dunes killed one occupant and critically injured another. The crew involved in the rescue of that fire’s survivors recently earned an award for their actions.
