Hilton Head’s pickleball enthusiasts will soon have a new option for playing locations as the town works to cater existing tennis courts to pickleball as well.

Next Monday, Sept. 18, the town will begin resurfacing tennis courts at the north end’s Old Schoolhouse Park and constructing new features to better accommodate pickeballers. There will be six dedicated courts after the project is complete.

“This involves installing new internal fencing and nets to enhance the playing experience for pickleball enthusiasts,” a town news release reads. “While resurfacing work is underway, Old Schoolhouse Park will be closed temporarily.”

The park is expected to remain closed from Sept. 18 to Monday, Oct. 30.

Hilton Head has 11 other locations to play, according to the Pickleheads.com map of courts, though some require membership or fees to use. Public courts are available at Chaplin Park and at the Cordillo tennis and pickleball complex.

The rising popularity of pickleball has gripped Hilton Head as it has the rest of the country. The town is currently considering installing a 24-court pickleball complex at Chaplin Park, which town officials considered could be used to host regional pickleball tournaments and for public use.

A formal decision on that plan has not been made.
