Georgia suspends gas tax. How much could South Carolinians save by crossing state lines?
The governor of Georgia announced a one month suspension on the state’s gas tax Tuesday. South Carolinians on the Savannah River could see a considerable difference in their fuel charges by crossing state lines.
The suspension will run from September 13 to October 12. Georgia Governor Brian Kemp had a similar suspension last year which ran from March to December.
Drivers can save 31 cents on regular gas and 35 cents on diesel per gallon, according to a press release from Kemp’s office.
“While high prices continue to hit family budgets, hardworking Georgians deserve real relief and that’s why I signed an executive order today to deliver it directly to them at the pump,” Kemp said in the press release.
Wednesday morning, the first Circle K off of I-95 after the Georgia border had gas priced at 3.29 per gallon. That’s about 40 cents cheaper than most stations in Bluffton.
At 40 cents a gallon Blufftonians, for example, would save a little over $7 for a full tank.
It’s worth noting that the distance to Savannah to Bluffton is about 25 miles, the average mpg for modern cars. So, drivers would have to use an extra gallon to get to Savannah and back. This is important in deciding if making the trip out is worth the money saved.
