Pride fest protest in Port Royal + best shark tooth spots. Check out these top headlines
Good afternoon on Thursday, Aug. 10.
Here’s today’s top news:
1. For the last four years, the LGBTQ+ Lowcountry Pride Group has held its annual Pride festival in Bluffton. This year, it wants to move the festival to Port Royal and is facing some resistance from residents. Reporter Karl Puckett explains the concerns raised at council meetings by opponents and also spoke to a defender who is looking forward to the November event.
2. For hundreds of Beaufort County residents, a trip to Bluffton’s Ulmer Family Pharmacy was synonymous with the bright, bubbly smile of Jillian Angner. Angner died Saturday at age 25, five months after she was shot while driving her 6-year-old son to school. Reporter Evan McKenna shares more about Angner’s life from those who loved her.
3. Former Beaufort County administrator Eric Greenway wants the public to hear his side of his controversial firing at the hands of the County Council and will get that opportunity at an upcoming public hearing. He has told The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette that he believes he was wrongfully terminated. Reporter Sebastian Lee spoke to council members about the need for transparency is this case.
4. Last August, hundreds of working islanders returned to their homes at Hilton Head’s Chimney Cove to unexpected eviction notices. Although the notices were later rescinded, it pushed the topic of affordable housing to the foreground. One year later, reporter Blake Douglas takes a deep dive into where the town stands on its plan to keep needed workers from leaving the island.
5. Are you one of those lucky folks who can spot shark teeth while just walking along a beach? I am not, unfortunately. I’ve never found one on my own. Garden and Gun magazine put together a list of the seven places where shark teeth are easier to find, and one of those is in South Carolina. If you are like me and need a little extra help from nature, perhaps it’s time to consider a road trip.
