Shark attacks and turtle trots? Here are 9 Beaufort 5K races to try in August
With the summer season halfway over and school beginning in just a few weeks, many families and friends are looking for memorable ways to enjoy the outdoors and the remaining time they have left before busy schedules start to take over.
If you want to include walking or running, a 5K might just be the perfect activity for you. Luckily, Beaufort County has several happening soon.
For those who need to brush up on their kilometers, a 5K, 5 kilometers, is equivalent to 3.1 miles.
Here are nine 5K events to participate in this August.
Palmetto Dunes Turtle Trot 5K
The Palmetto Dunes Turtle Trot 5K features several events throughout the summer, some of which occur in August. On Aug. 2, 9, 16 and 23, each Wednesday during the month, the 5k will be held in the Palmetto Dunes Resort on Hilton Head Island.
Registration for this event is online only, with the cut-off for registration being on the day of the race at 7:30 a.m. Interested participants may either register at runsignup.com by visiting PDPOA.RUN. Registration is $15 for participants aged 0-12 and $30 for others and includes the purchase of a race bib needed to enter the event as well as the purchase of an event T-shirt.
Races begin at 8 a.m.
PULSEology Sea Turtle 5K
Taking place in Coligny Place on Hilton Head Island’s south end on Aug. 5, the PULSEology Sea Turtle 5K will take place along Coligny Beach and participants who register before Aug. 2 will receive a commemorative race T-shirt.
Additionally, custom Sea Turtle Medals from the event will go to the overall winners and top three male and female winners in each age group.
The race/walk will begin at 8 a.m. on the beach.
Proceeds from this event as well as 100% of all donations will go directly to the Sea Turtle Care Center in honor of Presley Miller.
Registration for this event, which can be found online at runsignup.com is $20 for participants aged younger than 10 and $35 for every other participant.
Bobcat Scorcher 5K
The 12th annual Bobcat Scorcher 5K Run/Walk will take place at 8 a.m. on Aug. 12 at Bluffton High School, which is located at 12 H.E. McCracken Circle in Bluffton. The event is open to all ages and proceeds will go to benefit the BLHS Cross Country Team as well as help contribute to the sixth year of the Grace Sulak Scholarship Foundation, and the fifth year of the Scorcher Senior Student Scholarship Fund.
All participants will receive race shirts and custom medals will go to the overall male and female winners as well as the top three division winners.
High school students looking to participate get a discounted registration rate for $20 and, for all other, registration will cost $30. Interested individuals can sign up online at runsignup.com.
Shark Attack 5K
On Aug. 19 at 8:15 a.m., individuals looking to participate in an event within their local community should consider signing up for the Shark Attack 5K at May River High School, which is located at 601 New Riverside Road in Bluffton.
Registration for the races are $30 to participate in the 5K, $20 for students under 18 years old to participate in the 5K and $10 for the kids half mile. Commemorative T-shirts are guaranteed to registered participants if registered by Aug. 1.
Additionally, medals will be presented to the top male and female overall finishers and the top three finishers in each of the eight age divisions.
Proceeds from the event will go toward the boys and girls May River High School cross country teams.

Hilton Head BIG Fish 5K
The Hilton Head BIG Fish 5K Run/Walk will take place on Aug. 26 at 8 a.m. at the Sea Pines Beach Club, which is located at 87 N. Sea Pines Drive on Hilton Head Island. The event is open to all ages where participants will get to experience running on the nearby beach while enjoying views of the island’s south end.
A portion of the proceeds from this event will go to benefit the John Berrigan Cross Country Scholarship.
Registration is $30 or $25 if you opt to not receive a T-shirt. Student’s will receive a discounted registration fee of only $20. Registration ends on Aug. 24. Interested participants can register online at runsignup.com.
Custom medals will be rewarded to the overall male and female as well as the top three division winners.
