After multiple instances of aggressive gators, HHI community bans fishing for two months
A Hilton Head Island community has banned fishing, until at least Labor Day weekend, after multiple instances with aggressive alligators in its lagoon. Three alligators have had to be removed from the lagoon as of Thursday morning.
On June 22, an unidentified man was fishing in the lagoon at the Shipyard community on the island and was chased away by an alligator. No one was hurt, but it was “definitely a close call,” according to a email sent to members of the community. The incident was captured in a video that thousands have watched.
Following the instance, K&K Wildlife Services assessed the lagoon and immediately removed two gators, the email said. The wildlife management and pest control company continued to assess the lagoon over the following days.
A third, eight-foot alligator was removed Wednesday morning after showing signs of aggression on approach.
K&K recommended that Shipyard impose an immediate ban on fishing until the situation is under control, according to the email.
Wednesday morning the Shipyard Executive Committee voted to ban fishing through Labor Day weekend, Sept. 4.
The committee will meet again in the fall to determine if the fishing ban is still necessary. Communication will be sent out immediately, they said.
“As General Manager, the safety and security of the owners and guests within Shipyard is my top priority, said Shipyard’s General Manager, Meredith Elmore. “ I also realize that this is a hot topic for many people, so the Director of Safety & Security and I are available to address your questions or concerns regarding this issue.”
