Home of family of seven damaged by Hilton Head Island fire Sunday, officials say

A family of seven was displaced from their Hilton Head home Sunday after a candle left unattended started a fire, according to American Red Cross and fire officials.

No injuries were reported in the incident.

Firefighters from Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue responded to the mobile home on William Hilton Parkway around 4:22 p.m., according to Deputy Fire Marshall Russell Rogers. The fire was confined to the room where it started, Rogers said, and the rest of the home had “moderate” smoke damage. Power to the mobile home was cut following the fire.

The family is being helped by American Red Cross disaster-trained volunteers to get housing, food and clothing, according to a press release.

The Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue recommends the use of plate warmers to heat the wax for scented candles instead of flame, Rogers said. If candles are lit, they should never be left unattended.
