Funeral services for Hardeeville City Councilman David Spisso, who passed away Monday, will be held next week.
Visitation for Spisso will be held at Sauls Funeral Home, 90 Simmonsville Road, Bluffton, from 5-7 p.m Thursday, June 30. The funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, July 1, at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Bluffton.
A cause of death has not been released.
Spisso, 79, was elected to the Hardeeville City Council in 2014 and was in the last month of his second term.
“David Spisso was a devoted public official who served with passion and emotion,” Hardeville Mayor Harry Williams said. “He felt deeply about the people he represented and he often filled with tears as he gave his reports. And he was proud of his hometown.”
Though Spisso was originally from New Jersey, he always said that Hardeeville was his hometown. That catchphrase always stuck out to Ronda Cradle who works for the Hardeeville Police Department and knew Spisso well.
“He seemed like he appreciated being in the community,” said Cradle. “I couldn’t be in a room and Mr. Spisso not come over to me and speak to me.”
Between working with various non profits and going to many town events, Spisso was always happy to engage with his community. He’d even sit down and dye eggs with kids for Easter egg hunts, those who knew him said.
“As the saying goes, David wore his heart on his sleeve.” said Williams. “But no sleeve could hold David’s enormous heart.”
