Safety concerns grow on 3-mile section of Hwy. 278 in Okatie. What should be done?

A three-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 278 in Okatie, where more than 30,000 cars and trucks drive each day, is being studied for improvements to address rising safety concerns.

Beaufort County, which is conducting a study, is looking for input from residents. A public information meeting will take place Tuesday from 5 to 7 p.m. at Buckwalter Recreation Center, 905 Buckwalter Parkway in Bluffton.

The county is looking at ways to minimize traffic congestion and improve safety for Highway 278, also known as Fording Island Road, from Argent Boulevard to state Highway 170.

This section of the U.S. 278 corridor currently carries an average of 31,000 vehicles per day and has experienced significant growth, which has led to increased congestion and safety concerns. The study, which began in March, will be done by this fall.

Widening the road, combined with access management strategies and signal improvements, are expected to improve safety and traffic flow, according to the county.
