Roads in the Old Town Bluffton area — stretching from Calhoun Street to a portion of May River Road — will be closed Saturday until about 7 p.m. because of Mayfest, Bluffton police said.

Sgt. Bonifacio Perez urged those who are not attending Mayfest to find alternative routes to avoid traffic near the shuttered section of Old Town. For those heading to the event — an annual festival with arts and crafts as well as food — free shuttles will leave from the parking lot at Red Cedar Elementary School.

Saturday’s event marks the 42nd Bluffton Mayfest. The festival took a two-year break due to the coronavirus.

The free event was founded by local businesswoman Babbie Guscio in the late 1970s, according to prior Island Packet reporting. It’s been coordinated by the Bluffton Rotary Club since at least 2009.

About 150 local food and art vendors who typically line both sides of Calhoun Street down to the May River are expected to sell everything from pottery to paintings. The pie-eating and ugly dog contests are back as well.
