Want to bring your dog to a Hilton Head Island beach? Here are all the rules to follow
Does your four-legged friend want to join you on the beach? With all of the beaches that Hilton Head Island has to offer, it can be hard to pinpoint just when and where your pet is allowed.
Good news! Hilton Head is a predominately pet-friendly locale. Throughout the island, dogs can be seen accompanying their owners in grocery stores, local retail shops, restaurants and yes, even the beaches. With the weather warming up, it’s important to know when you can take a stroll with Fido along one of Hilton Head Island’s renowned beaches.
Rules for bringing animals onto the beach vary depending on where you are, time of year, and time of day.
All Hilton Head Island beaches
All beaches on Hilton Head Island are pet-friendly. However, they do have varying restrictions and one has its own separate set of regulations.
According to the Town of Hilton Head Island’s website, from October through March, animals are allowed to visit the beach at any time while leashed or under voice control.
What about the rest of the year?
April through the Thursday prior to Memorial Day, visiting animals are allowed to be on the beach with leash laws still in effect. However, voice control is only an option between the hours of 5 p.m. and 10 a.m.
Starting with the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day, your pet is not allowed on the beach between the hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. However, all other hours they may be present while leashed or under voice control authority.
Beginning the Tuesday following Labor Day through the month of September, animals are again allowed on the beach if leashed with voice control only being an option between the hours of 5 p.m. and 10 a.m.
During Hilton Head Island’s “official beach season,” which falls on April 1 through Sept. 30 each year, dogs are prohibited from swimming at specific designated areas between the hours of 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the remaining hours open for their enjoyment.
These designated swimming areas include:
Alder Lane Beach Access
Coligny Beach Park
Driessen Beach Park
Folly Field Beach Park
Islanders Beach Park
Fish Haul Beach Park
Fish Haul Beach, which overlooks Port Royal Sound, is a quiet piece of paradise that sits at the north end of the island. This beach offers free parking and is pet-friendly year-round with a continuing “at-all-times” leash law.
Additional beach rules to follow for your pet
At every beach on Hilton Head Island, owners are expected to readily pick up anything left behind by their dog — biodegradable or otherwise. If you did not come prepared, there are pet waste stations located at any of the public access points seen when entering and exiting the beach that provide small black bags for your benefit as well as a built-in disposal unit.
Additionally, Hilton Head Island is renowned for its environmental ecosystems and preservation. Shore birds tend to stick together and as tempting as it might be for your pet to run through and disrupt the bird’s feeding time, it is illegal for them to chase, harass or pester the local wildlife in any way.
