Boy, 3, died after recovering from dental procedure on Hilton Head Island, coroner says

A 3-year-old boy died after recovering from dental work on Hilton Head Island earlier this month, according to the county coroner, who says the death is still under investigation.

The 3-year-old of Beaufort went into respiratory arrest followed by cardiac arrest while at an outpatient surgery center on Hilton Head on Feb. 8, according to Beaufort County Coroner David Ott.

It couldn’t immediately be determined whether the child was under anesthesia for the dental procedure, and Ott said he didn’t know.

Ott declined to release the child’s name, citing child privacy laws.

The coroner said the boy was taken to Hilton Head Hospital and then to a children’s hospital at the Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, where he died two days later.

He was recovering after dental work on the island, Ott said.

The circumstances of how the boy died are pending the lab results from his autopsy, Ott said. The results take about eight weeks.

The Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office confirmed there is currently no criminal investigation into the death.
