Veteran and daughter displaced after fire at Burton home Sunday, officials say

A bedroom in an empty Burton home caught fire Sunday afternoon, causing smoke damage that displaced residents, according to a press release from the Burton Fire District.

Around 1 p.m. Sunday, firefighters were called to the home on Ramsey Road in Burton, an unincorporated community in northern Beaufort County, the press release said. When they got there, they found smoke coming from the single-wide mobile home and a fire in a bedroom. No one was home at the time, the press release said, and no injuries were reported. Electricity was cut off, Burton Fire District spokesperson Capt. Dan Byrne said, as a precaution to prevent another fire.

The residents, a veteran of the U.S. Navy and his daughter, are believed to be staying with family and friends, Byrne said.

This marks the Burton Fire District’s fifth house fire in 2022.

Investigators believe the cause of the fire was electrical, but an official cause cannot be released until an investigation is complete.
