Kitchen fire in downtown Beaufort displaces family, officials say
A family of four was displaced from their home in Beaufort Friday after a fire broke out in their kitchen, according to the Town of Port Royal Fire Department.
Firefighters received a call about a kitchen fire around 6 p.m. Friday on Park Avenue in Beaufort, according to Ross Vezin with the City of Beaufort/Town of Port Royal Fire Department.
The home incurred smoke damage and damage to the kitchen, Vezin said. One man went to the hospital with a second-degree burn he got while trying to put out the fire before firefighters got there, Vezin said. The fire was put out in minutes, he said.
It was the third structure fire of the day for the fire department.
Another kitchen fire broke out at a home on Bay Street around 7:30 p.m., Vezin said. That fire began in the microwave and was quickly put out. Earlier in the day around 11:30 a.m. at a senior living apartment facility on Ribaut Road, firefighters were called out for an elevator fire. In that instance, the fire appears to have started from a motor in the elevator, Vezin said.
In a post on their Facebook page, the department urged homeowners to keep an eye on stoves, keep pot handles turned towards the back of the stove and keep fire extinguishers handy in case of emergencies.
