This Hilton Head Island beach is about to get more accessible. Here’s what’s going on
Hilton Head’s Islanders Beach Park, which already has a boardwalk through dunes and many other amenities, is getting a new pavilion that will give visitors with disabilities a chance to enjoy the beach views.
Crews have begun bringing building materials to the park at 94 Folly Field Road with construction expected to be completed prior to May 30.
The town has contracted with Nix Construction Co. to build a handicap accessible, covered overlook pavilion adjacent to the existing beach boardwalk. Anyone visiting the park will be able to use the pavilion, but it has been specifically sized and designed for individuals with disabilities using guidelines from the American Disabilities Act, the town said. The pavilion will feature a wide entry way for wheelchair access and benches for seating.
Taylor Ladd, a project Manager for the Town’s Capital Program, said in a news release that the project was prompted by a resident who reached out to town officials with the idea.
“This pavilion will allow anyone with limited access to comfortably enjoy the ocean breeze and views of our beautiful beach,” Ladd said
The town invites beach park visitors to continue enjoying the park and boardwalk to the beach but be aware that construction will be occurring on the property over the coming months. For more information, contact Ladd at 843 1341-4607 or taylorl@hiltonheadislandsc.gov.
