Anyone who has ever wanted to live in one of the houses they see on television shows about idealistic home builders now has a shot after a Hilton Head couple listed their catamaran-inspired build featured on the Discovery Channel for sale.

The home, shaped like a boat, is listed for $62,000 and already had more than 500 people interested in seeing it over the weekend on St. Helena Island, Jason Cooke, a local craftsman on Hilton Head, said. Cooke and his partner, Cassie Byam, built the home for an episode of the Discovery Channel’s “Building Off the Grid” titled “Carolina Catamaran” that aired in February 2020.

“I’m letting everybody take a look at it,” Cooke said. “It was kind of an overwhelming response.”

The home is nearly 1,000 square feet and has two bedrooms and 1 1/2 bath.

The build, and the TV show, Cooke said, came about after he had completed a renovation on Callawassie Island with a “monotonous schedule” that lasted several years. When he had the opportunity to let his imagination run wild while designing the 1,000 square-foot home, it got “a little big,” he said, because he didn’t want to do anything “average.”

“I built it for myself,” Cooke said. “When I was finally able to do what I want after being a builder for so long on Hilton Head, that’s kind of just what happens ... Go big or go home.”

Cooke, whose parents own a design center in Florence, South Carolina, grew up picking out paint colors and working summers at the family business. When he came to Hilton Head after finishing college in Columbia when he was 23, he said, he began working on renovations in the area.

“I guess I’ve always been creative, even when I was a kid,” Cooke said. “My experience with creating restaurants, nightclubs and now casinos (is more) fun as far as the way you can make structures kind of make people feel a certain way. You kind of create the flow and experience with design and that’s one of the things I don’t overlook.”

Since the show aired, Cooke said, he and the same team that helped design the catamaran have been building an 8,000 square-foot casino in Las Vegas. Now, Cooke and his family are hoping to open a takeout restaurant on Hilton Head so that the family business is a little bit “friendlier” for his four children, 13, 10, 2 and 1 year old, to grow up helping around.

“We decided to go all-in on the restaurant,” Cooke said. “We’re keeping the land out here which was a product of the show, but we’re going to have to let this go. I can build another one.”

Cooke was showing the catamaran house at 1450 Sea Island Parkway on St. Helena Island until 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 12. Appointments are required after 3 p.m. Sunday, Cooke said, and you can join a private Facebook group to sign up and see photos of the listing at facebook.com/groups/beaufortcountybuyselltrade.
