How to honor a veteran at Beaufort National Cemetery on Wreaths Across America Day
The deadline to honor veterans buried in Beaufort in time for the 2021 Wreaths Across America Day is Saturday, according to a news release from the American Legion Auxiliary Post 205.
“We would like to raise funds to place wreaths on the headstones of veterans laid to rest at Beaufort National Cemetery to ensure the individuals who served to protect the freedoms of our country never be forgotten and to bring the community together in a patriotic commemoration,” Post 205 said in the press release.
The Wreaths Across America program started in 1992 when the owner of Maine’s Worcester Wreath Company decided to place extra wreaths on graves at Arlington National Cemetery, according to the program’s website. The program garnered national attention when a photo of the wreaths placed on the snow-covered graves went viral in 2005, the website said. Since then, on Dec. 18, over 2,500 participating locations honor veterans by placing wreaths on their graves for National Wreaths Across America Day.
What started as a “simple gesture of thanks” became a national movement with millions of volunteers nationwide, the press release said.
At least 7,266 wreaths for Beaufort National Cemetery have been purchased so far, according to calculations from the Wreaths Across America website. The program’s goal for Beaufort National Cemetery is 26,000.
Wreaths can be purchased for $15 online by Saturday, Nov. 20, 2021. A portion of the funds will be used to support the post’s projects, according to the press release. Wreaths can also be purchased by printing and mailing in the online order form with a check to the post.
Checks can be made out to American Legion Post 205, P.O. Box 2376, Bluffton, SC, 29910.
