Time to say goodbye. Demolition starting soon on closed restaurant at Hilton Head marina
Watch out for the big orange excavator near the Shelter Cove Marina this month.
The town of Hilton Head Island is planning to demolish the old Kingfisher restaurant at 18 Harbourside Lane, which is just down the street from Disney’s island resort.
Work will occur at the waterfront site on weekdays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and is expected to wrap up by the end of November, according to the town.
A reporter on Tuesday saw an excavator and compact track loader parked at the closed restaurant. A fence was set up around the building, and warning signs were scattered around the 1.5-acre property.
Local officials have told residents and visitors to steer clear of the machinery and demolition zone when walking along a nearby path.
The town bought the land last fall for $875,000, records show. The property will be used to increase open space in the marina area, connect a nearby pathway system, add parking and create more public access to the waterfront, Deputy Town Manager Josh Gruber said at the time. The town used real estate transfer fees to buy the parcel, according to previous reporting from The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette.
Some Facebook commenters were excited about the town’s demolition announcement.
“A passive park is great especially for the summer Fireworks,” wrote Kiersten Kleiber.
“There needs to be more parking there. There isn’t much and people have to park far away for dining and events,” added Christine Amico.
