‘Pretty lucky’: No injuries reported after plane runs off roadway at Ridgeland airport

The Ridgeland-Claude Dean Airport closed briefly Thursday after a small aircraft ran off the runway, according to Ridgeland Fire Chief Bradley Bonds.

A two-seater plane with just the pilot aboard was landing around noon when it ran off the side of the runway, The Jasper County Sun Times first reported and Bond confirmed. No one was injured, and the plane appeared to have “minimal damage.”

There was a small fuel leak, which was quickly cleaned up by crews, he said.

“This is something you don’t see everyday,” Bonds said. “Overall, we’re pretty lucky we walked away with no injures.”

The cause of the accident is not yet known, he said.

The airport was scheduled to be closed until 3 p.m. but may be able to open sooner.
