Need a ride? Hilton Head’s trolley to restart service this month (and it’s free)

The Breeze is back!

Hilton Head Island’s trolley will start service again June 22, Palmetto Breeze announced this week.

The trolley, which runs between the Shelter Cove and Coligny areas, will operate from 1 p.m. until 10:30 p.m. ,Monday through Thursday, and until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. Trolleys will be at each stop every 30 minutes.

Rides this summer will be free, the company announced. Previously, it cost $1 per ride.

To discourage the spread of germs as the coronovirus pandemic continues, Palmetto Breeze has installed plastic barriers. Passengers this summer will also enter and exist via separate doors.

Face masks are encouraged on the trolleys, and hand sanitizer will be available onboard, according to Palmetto Breeze.

Palmetto Breeze typically starts running trolleys in April, but delayed the start of the 2020 season due to the coronavirus.

The service will run through October 2020.

Each trolley is air-conditioned and has a bike rack with space for up to two bikes.

New routes?

This year, Palmetto Breeze and the Town of Hilton Head Island discussed establishing a new trolley route into the Folly Field area to help visitors and residents get to shops and restaurants.

The route was approved, but will not be implemented this summer.

Trolley service started on Hilton Head in 2018. Since then, the hours for the service have been adjusted to help employees get to work and visitors traverse the island to cut down on car traffic.
