22-year-old Beaufort man dies in Port Royal motorcycle crash, coroner’s office says

A 22-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene of a fatal motorcycle accident in Port Royal on Monday, Beaufort County Coroner’s Office Chief Deputy David Ott said.

Steven R. McKinzie, of Beaufort, was traveling on Old Shell Road when he apparently attempted to pass a vehicle on the double yellow line, Ott said Monday.

He said McKinzie appears to have over-corrected as a car came toward him.

The motorcycle crashed into an oak tree on private property.

McKinzie was not wearing a helmet. He was pronounced dead at 3:22 p.m.

An autopsy is planned at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston for 9 a.m. Wednesday.
