Coast Guard rescues 5 after yacht hits jetty and starts taking on water off Savannah

Five boaters were rescued late Monday after their yacht struck a jetty off Savannah, according to a news release from the Coast Guard.

A Coast Guard vessel from Tybee Island and a Dolphin helicopter from Air Station Savannah responded to the scene of the 10:55 p.m. call for help from Nauty Thoughts, a 57-foot motor yacht, in the Savannah River.

The distress call said the yacht was taking on water.

A rescue swimmer was lowered from the helicopter to help the boaters board the Coast Guard vessel. All five boaters were wearing life jackets and were transported to Station Tybee Island in good condition, the news release says.

There were no reported injuries.

The yacht could not be salvaged by TowBoat Savannah because it lost stability quickly, the news release said.
