Autopsy results awaited in death of 14-year-old Hilton Head Middle School student

A 14-year-old girl from Hilton Head Island died on Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, according to Chief Deputy Coroner David Ott.

An autopsy Thursday morning at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston did not determine the cause of death for Presley Miller, 14, Ott said.

He said more tests are required to figure out what killed Miller, and it will be another eight weeks until the results are complete.

FITS News, a news and commentary website, first reported the death.

Miller was an 8th grade student at Hilton Head Island Middle School, Beaufort County School District spokesperson Jim Foster said Thursday.

Parents at the school said they had heard various accounts of the reasons for Miller’s death, including that she succumbed to an allergic reaction from a stingray sting last weekend.

Ott confirmed Miller was stung by a stingray on Hilton Head Island May 4. But he cautions there is no official link between the sting and her death more than two weeks later.

The autopsy will determine whether the sting was at all related to Miller’s death.

She was first admitted to Hilton Head Hospital on Monday, transferred to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah on Tuesday, and passed away there on Wednesday, according to Ott.
