Lowcountry leaders are creating regional stormwater rules. They want to hear from you

The Southern Lowcountry region will soon have a unified plan to manage stormwater runoff and flooding issues.

This month, Beaufort County, Jasper County, the towns of Bluffton and Port Royal and the cities of Beaufort and Hardeeville drafted a joint ordinance that residents, developers and permit applicants will have to follow.

If passed by all of the jurisdictions, the ordinance would create a regional stormwater program.

Lowcountry leaders are asking for public input on the draft ordinance until Feb. 17.

Southern Lowcountry Regional Board members will host sessions for citizen comments on:

  • Thursday, Jan. 23, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Palmetto Electric Community Room, 1 Cooperative Way, Hardeeville
  • Tuesday, Jan. 28, 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Beaufort County Administration Building Council Chambers, Robert Smalls Government Complex, 100 Ribaut Rd., Beaufort
  • Thursday, Jan. 30, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. at Bluffton Town Hall, Theodore D. Washington Municipal Building Council Chambers, 20 Bridge St., Bluffton

Residents can also submit public comments on Beaufort County’s website. All comments presented to the board by Feb. 17 at 6 p.m. “will be reviewed and considered in the development of the Final Draft of the Southern Lowcountry Stormwater Ordinance and Design Manual that is proposed for adoption by each participating jurisdiction.”

The draft ordinance and its executive summary can be viewed in their entirety on Beaufort County’s website.
