Man killed as car strikes tree in Beaufort County, police say

A Summerville man was killed Saturday afternoon when his vehicle left U.S. 21 and struck a tree, a S.C. Highway Patrol release says.

Francis Joseph Kelly III, 66, of Summerville was killed in the crash, Beaufort County Deputy Coroner Deborah Youmans said Sunday.

The 2013 Ford Edge Kelly was driving crashed about 3:40 p.m. near Jasmine Hall Road — six miles north of the Beaufort.

Motorists were redirected around the scene Saturday as both southbound lanes of U.S. 21 were blocked for emergency response and investigation of the crash, a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office alert says.

The Ford Edge was the only vehicle involved in the crash, the Highway Patrol release says. It also says Kelly was the only occupant and he was wearing a seat-belt. No other information on the crash was available.

Kelly was taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
