A new dock in town: Palmetto Bay Marina, destroyed by Hurricane Matthew, rebuilds

From 1958 until 2016, the Palmetto Bay Marina on Hilton Head Island hummed with activity.

Since Hurricane Matthew came through in 2016, the waters have been silent.

The storm crumpled the marina and caused years of financial troubles.

While nearby businesses at the base of the Cross Island Parkway have rebuilt, the marina has seen little change.

Now, according to nearby Carolina Crab Company, #TheBayIsBack.

The restaurant posted photos of the first new docks in the marina Friday afternoon. In the photo, the first phase of construction appears to be complete, and boats and jet-skis are docked in their new homes.

The revitalization is part of a two-phase plan by Palmetto Bay Marina LLC, which took title of the property in February 2019, according to Kuy Scott, a representative of the company.

Scott said wet slips for rental at the marina will be available starting in late February 2020. Once the marina is fully complete, he said there will be a section for “docking and dining,” or for boat owners that want to float up and dock before eating at one of the several restaurants in the Palmetto Bay Marina area.

“We’re going through cleaning everything up,” Scott said in March. “We’re excited, and Palmetto Bay should be excited.”

The renovation includes several new aluminum docks with space for about 144 boats, according to Scott. He said the marina will have more parking and new landscaping.

While the first phase began in fall 2019, the second is planned to begin this year.
