5 things you need to know before heading to the Spanish Moss Trail

The Spanish Moss Trail in Beaufort isn’t completed yet, but the 10 miles that are finished are very popular among Beaufort locals and tourists.

The trail, which will eventually be 16 miles and will extend all the way to Parris Avenue in Port Royal, has become a favorite place to go walk, run or ride your bike.

Before you head out to the trail though, here are some important facts that you should know.

▪  There are two restroom locations and six trailhead parking areas along the trail: The restrooms are located at Broome Lane and the Parker’s Convenience Store on Trask Parkway.

▪  There are two designated fishing piers: The piers are at Ealey’s Treslte and Mather’s Trestle, both of which are on Battery Creek. Fishing at any other point along the trail is prohibited.

▪  The trail is open from dawn to dusk: It closes once the sun goes down because there are no lights along the trail.

▪  Leashed dogs are welcome along the trail: There are dog-waste stations available along the trail as well as tri-level water fountains to accomodate adults, children and dogs.

▪  There is a Spanish Moss Trail Mobile Guide app: The app contains a map that shows all of the features that can be found along the trail. It is free for download on the Apple store and Google Play.

Currently, the trail connects Smilax Avenue in Port Royal to Clarendon Road in Grays Hill, but after the extension of the trail it will reach from The Sands Beach in Port Royal to the Whale Branch River.
