Get the lowdown on Lowcountry animals and history at museum’s Family Fun Day

The Coastal Discovery Museum on Hilton Head Island will present its “Family Fun Day” from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 10 at its location at Honey Horn.

Visitors will be able to see the museum’s boardwalk exhibits, learn about the salt marsh, explore the replica shell ring and see what sort of shells, animal bones and more are hidden in it.

Visitors also can visit the horse barn and pasture to see the marsh tacky Comet and his companion horse Hawk. A visit to the Karen Wertheimer Butterfly Habitat will let attendees see the life cycle of various butterflies that live on Hilton Head Island.

Visitors also will have the opportunity to pull up a crab trap, tour the Heritage Garden and see what indigo and other crops look like. Indigo dyeing will take place as visitors learn about its importance.

Birdwatching with the HHI Audubon Society will be offered. Other community partners will be on site with activities as well.

During the day in the Kid’s Zone, children will have an opportunity to try on Colonial-style clothing, play with Colonial-style toys and games, take a scavenger hunt on the painted mural wall and learn about shells, turtle bones and many other items found on the island thanks to the sponsorship of The Bargain Box. Myrtle the terrapin and horseshoe crabs are also in the room for entertainment. The Tom Peeples Discovery Lab will be open for all to meet the museum’s friendly alligator, corn snake, horseshoe crabs and other critters.

The Hilton Head Regional Health Care Temporary Exhibit Gallery will feature “Summer Images.”

There is no charge for admission, and reservations are not required. Food and beverages will be available for purchase.
