Have questions about the CDC’s eviction hold in SC? These experts will have answers
People who have lingering questions about the federal government’s temporary ban on evictions will be able to pose them to an attorney next week, as two statewide nonprofits are planning a housing forum for Oct. 9.
At the 10 a.m. Zoom session, the forum will discuss whom the order by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention protects and how it can be used. Representatives of the South Carolina Association for Community Economic Development and Appleseed Legal Justice Center plan to share updates on COVID-19 relief efforts, answer questions and allow participants to talk about their housing experiences.
The CDC issued its order Sept. 4, placing a temporary ban on residential evictions for tenants who provide their landlord a declaration that they meet certain criteria. Those criteria include that tenants make no more than $99,000 per year, do not have other housing options, have suffered substantial loss of income or extraordinary out-of-pocket medical expenses and have attempted to obtain government housing assistance.
The CDC order expires Dec. 31 and is intended to stem the effects of the pandemic.
Adam Protheroe, Appleseed’s litigation attorney, said the two organizations planned this event to provide information to housing providers, community organizations and others that they can pass on to tenants.
“One of the concerns with the moratorium is that it’s not automatic, and folks aren’t necessarily going to know what to do about it,” he said.
