About 50 May River High School band members are quarantining for COVID-19

Approximately 50 members of the May River High School band are quarantining after two COVID-19 cases were reported among people associated with the band, Beaufort County School District spokeswoman Candace Bruder said Tuesday.

Families were notified of the quarantine on Monday, according to Bruder.

Band members will quarantine until 14 days after their last close contact with one or both infected individuals.

May River is the fourth district high school to quarantine dozens of students in the past month. In total, about 200 people have been asked to quarantine due to cases or close contacts at Beaufort County School District high schools.

On Tuesday, Bruder said that 38 members of Bluffton High School’s junior varsity football team are quarantining following their Thursday game against Colleton County High School. One of the opposing team’s players tested positive for COVID-19.

One Hilton Head Island High School football player and one part-time employee have tested positive for COVID-19. The entire J.V. and varsity teams were quarantined in two waves, along with two coaching staff, for a total of 61 people in quarantine.

The first group of 18 close contacts ended their quarantine Monday. The second group of 43 will end their quarantine on Friday.

At Beaufort High School, three cheerleaders tested positive for COVID-19. All 48 members of the J.V. and varsity cheerleading squads were asked to quarantine.

Beaufort and Hilton Head High were scheduled to play each other in their football season opener on Friday. That game has been postponed to Oct. 30.

This is a breaking news story, and will be updated.
