Percentage of positive tests is still too high, DHEC says

At least 110,658 people have tested positive for the coronavirus in South Carolina and 2,380 have died, according to state officials.

The S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control on Sunday reported 663 new cases — the eighth day in a row new cases were below 1,000.

DHEC cautions that the percentage of positive tests remains high, and above the level necessary to control the virus’ spread. On Sunday, 14.9% of tests were positive.

About 8.7% of tests come back positive nationally. The World Health Organization recommends a positive rate of 5% or lower.

Officials on Sunday reported eight additional coronavirus-related deaths, compared to 33 the day before.

Plan for high school sports

High school football games are set to start up again in South Carolina this week.

The first private school games will start Friday and public school games will start in a month, The State reported on Sunday. Gov. Henry McMaster has limited the number of fans allowed to 50% capacity or 250 people — whichever is less.

The state Department of Commerce approved the S.C. Independent Schools Association’s plan to allow fans at athletic events last week. Capacity will be reduced with seating in every other row. Masks are required when entering and exiting the venue and when moving around the venue.

S.C. High School League is finalizing its proposal, which will be sent to the Department of Commerce this week.

Face coverings will be required at all times for staff and attendees, according to the in-progress plan obtained by The State.

Labor Day could lead to COVID-19 surge, DHEC warns

Memorial Day and the Fourth of July were behind two of the biggest coronavirus surges in South Carolina, and that has health officials worried history may repeat itself with Labor Day.

“Public health officials, including myself, continue to have those concerns, because people go out and celebrate,” and don’t socially distance or wear masks, state epidemiologist Dr. Linda Bell said Friday during a call with reporters.

“When we see these gatherings, and the majority of people are not wearing masks and they are not physically distancing, it’s those previous experiences that cause me concern with the upcoming holiday,” Bell said.
