10 new coronavirus cases confirmed in Beaufort County Friday, no new deaths
State health officials confirmed 10 more cases of the coronavirus in Beaufort County on Friday, bringing the total to 361 since the pandemic began in mid-March.
No new coronavirus-related deaths were announced Friday.
The announcement caps off a week that saw a slight increase in the daily average number of cases reported in the county compared to the week prior, according to an analysis of S.C. Department of Health and Environmental Control case data by The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette.
DHEC is not providing data at the county level about how many people with COVID-19 have recovered.
The agency reported 13 additional deaths and 331 new cases statewide on Friday, the largest single-day increase in cases since the pandemic began. South Carolina has recorded 11,131 cases of the coronavirus as of May 29 and 483 deaths, according to state health officials’ figures.
On Wednesday evening, Rick Toomey, director of DHEC, one of the main agencies leading the state’s pandemic response, resigned citing health issues and a desire to spend time with family. Toomey, who lives in Beaufort County and previously served as the CEO of Beaufort Memorial Hospital, has led the agency since late 2018.

Beaufort County could have as many as 2,218 undiagnosed cases, DHEC officials say.
DHEC does not release any identifying information or specifics concerning underlying conditions a patient might have.
Positive cases are those in which a patient has been tested and diagnosed with coronavirus. Because of a lack of access to testing, state health officials have said previously that for every one confirmed case, there could be up to nine people who are infected but have not been tested.
DHEC’s totals can have small increases and decreases day to day as officials find discrepancies in the data.
The cases include anyone who has tested positive since the pandemic started. The data also includes those who have recovered or died. According to DHEC, these numbers are current as of May 29.
